This is a very often question of our brides-to-be. There are many options nowadays, and you would need to play with each one to select the best. Or just good advice. So here we go.
Let’s start with the basics. Do you know the difference between wedding invitations and save the dates, or you think it’s the same thing? Save the dates are usually sent a year before the wedding date, while wedding invitations are typically sent 6-8 weeks before the wedding.
So, it makes sense that you have your wedding website ready before you sent the Save The Dates out. That way, you can include your website link.
What options do we have for free wedding websites? The most established are TheKnot or WeddingWire, but you also have Minted, SquareSpace, or Zola. To make it easier for you, we’ve asked real brides-to-be.
That’s literally my only regret is that I didn’t have my website included on my save the dates! I’d have it done first if I could do it all over!
I used The Knot because they are the only wedding website I could find that offers straight-up cash funds for your registry! So although you can label it “honeymoon fund”, “new home fund”, “renovation fund”, whatever you want, it will go directly to your PayPal account so you can spend it as you want!
Other sites offer for people to pay for specific experiences for you through their selected vendors, which will not convert to just giving you the money it will buy those particular things for you, but the Knot truly gives you cash funds, and that sold me! I also had multiple friends with great experiences with them.
I’m finishing my website before I send out save the dates since more than 90% of people will be flying in so they can see where the room block is etc. I’ve looked at all the options for websites on The Knot, WeddingWire, Zola, Squarespace, and Minted. My favorite options were on Minted, so that’s what I’m going to use. But really they’re all great!
I used Minted because it was one flat fee to get a .com, and it was only $20! Guests can also RSVP through it!
Zola has RSVP. It’s actually great because you can set up multiple events, and people will still only see the activities they are invited to (ex: rehearsal dinner). You can even turn on the RSVP function later if you want. So for me, I just sent out my save the dates, and the RSVP is hidden. Later, when I sent out invitations, they can go to the website, and the RSVP will be on, so they can search for their name, and then they’ll see all the events they are invited to.
Zola is fantastic! So easy, and yes, you can do a honeymoon fund! – with the smallest fee!
I started one on the knot after we got engaged in August and have been having so much trouble with it. I got very frustrated today and ended up starting over with Zola, and it’s been soooo much better!!

The Knot is hard to use as a bride and as a guest. I gave up and finally went with Zola.

I’ve been using The Knot and haven’t had any issues. My MOH tried to RSVP, and with a simple click, she did! I also put in a honeymoon fund on my website. I personally haven’t had any issues at all with it, and I find it easy to use. I also haven’t tried Zola, though, so I can’t compare.
I’m using minted! I checked all the other sites like Zola, The Knot, Wedding Wire, and even SquareSpace, and I just didn’t love the designs and minted had what I was looking for! Plus, if you want, you can get matching Save The Dates and/or invitations to your site too.
I recommend Zola!! I started out with The Knot but got too frustrated with it. It wasn’t working well, kept crashing, and just wasn’t really user-friendly for me. Luckily I wasn’t too far into it, so I switched to Zola. I like it soo much better!!
I liked Zola’s layouts better. I also plan on using their RSVP feature and LOVE their guest list manager tool.
I played around with both The Knot, minted, and Zola when I started building mine out. I ultimately went with Zola, it’s so much easier to use, and the user experience is so much better than The Knot, in my opinion.
I had The Knot website for the last two months and literally JUST (like an hour ago) gave up and went to Zola. I couldn’t get anything the way I wanted it on TheKnot and got extremely frustrated.
According to many brides-to-be, Zola is hands down the best! Briana said:
I made a website on Zola and The Knot, but the Zola registry is amazing, and the website options are beautiful, so I shut down my The Knot website.” She added, “I also bought a custom domain through Zola, so our website address isn’t long and looks really nice printed on the save the dates!
“Now I wish I went with Zola over The Knot. Your website is beautiful and so cool!”
Zola is so user-friendly. Definitely, recommend that over The Knot (which I gave up quickly after discovering how easy Zola was). You can totally add items from other websites/stores to your Zola registry. You just need a link.
Zola is fantastic. Very user-friendly, clean, and easy to use. It’s an all-in-one for those who want to add their own registries or use Zola’s. You can also use it to send invites and receive RSVPs. I will be collecting RSVPs via Zola and loved their tool. The RSVP tool is customizable and protected. It lets people RSVP only if I put them on the list (no sneakily trying to add a plus one!), and it doesn’t let just any random person try and RSVP if they find my wedding website. Also, they even give you a spreadsheet template so you can upload it seamlessly. You can also share it to collect addresses before mailing invites too!
I’ve been building our website using The Knot since August, and today I hit an all-time high in frustration and switched everything over to Zola!
Well, ladies, I guess that it’s pretty clear that Zola is a winner! What do you do think? But I have one more favorite. I just can’t add it as a free website.
I personally used Appy Couple. You do have to pay a fee, but it is so easy to use, and I think it’s more professional looking than a lot of the sites. I’ve had no problem with online RSVPs, and it’s effortless to set certain events (like the rehearsal) to be viewed by only certain guests.
I started one on each to play around and figure out what I liked/disliked but ultimately went with Appy Couple, which cost $50, but has been so worth it. Ultimately I liked the aesthetic and possibilities for Appy Couple best. Plus once I got my guest info in there, it’s been so easy to send out save the dates and RSVPs.
And one premium piece of advice for our awesome readers. Although you might be excited about your wedding website, do not post it on your social media, you might have some people that you don’t want to know about your wedding. ?

Edit … right after publishing this article we find out that there is another great option for more high-end brides at WeddingChicks! It looks very cool for the first sight, but most important is that you have direct access to amazing vendors, not TheKnot or WeddingWire level.
