Is hiring a Mariachi Band for a wedding a bad idea?

One of our brides just asked if it is really is a good idea to hire a Mariachi band for a wedding. So, we asked our team, and we have two responses. One from Peter Kiral who manages Kiral Artists – wedding musicians in Charleston, New York, and Miami and the second from Jan Freire, our luxury destination wedding photographer.

But first, let’s clarify what Mariachi means.

Mariachi is a style of regional Mexican music that dates back to the 18th century, evolving in the countryside of various regions of western Mexico. It was the music of country people, music that celebrated the joys, the struggles, and the triumphs of the Mexican people.

The mariachi band consisting of at least two violins, two trumpets, one Spanish guitar, one vihuela (a high-pitched, five-string guitar), and one guitarrón (a small-scaled acoustic bass), but sometimes featuring more than twenty musicians.

We found this review from one bride on the internet: “We did it! I wasn’t 100% sure about it, but it was important to my fiancé and his family, so I went with it without voicing any concern. SO GLAD I did, it was actually pretty awesome!”

Peter, our violinist, explains: “I’ve seen several of these bands recently, and I just love it. Usually, they are at the cocktail hour.”

He added more… I coordinated music for a wedding where the couple wanted it, and it was terrific. The guests loved it! The mariachi band started right after the ceremony, and they led the guests to the cocktail hour with the couple in the lead. The band stayed and played during cocktail hour while the couple finished pictures and came back and enjoyed the music. Mariachis faded out just before the DJ picked up.

I love it when they play during the ceremony! The Mariachis can actually lead the way down the aisle or just be in the back! They can play some awesome fanfare music, and many times I’ve seen that the groom walks in with his parents, followed by the groomsmen. It really can be fantastic! Everyone usually claps and dances.

A mariachi band for a wedding typically costs around $3,000, though the exact price can vary based on factors such as the location of the event and specific requirements.

You can ask Kiral Artists for a quote, tho.

I’ve even seen them playing Pachelbel’s Canon in D for the bridesmaids, and Here Comes the Bride for the bride on the strings. So wonderful!
They also can play during the dinner table to the table.

And Jan Freire, our celebrity wedding photographer, added. “I just recently shot a wedding on a yacht in Miami, and they hired Mariachis. It was actually the main band of the night, and then they had a DJ. So the Mariachi band played for the ceremony as well as the reception.

I loved the idea from the first moment. Mariachis are definitely a fun element to any wedding. Everyone enjoyed the music, and they also played popular songs like Despacito.

Well, and I embraced it even from the perspective of a photographer. I was smart to use the band as an excellent backdrop for their photos. Like the one used in this article.

And what’s the expense? The average cost for a professional mariachi band typically ranges between $350-$650 an hour depending on your location, the number of band members, and their overall experience. Most mariachis can tailor the size of their band and instruments to any event, so be sure to ask about different pricing options.

Hmm. sounds like it’s a pretty good idea all around. We didn’t have a mariachi band because that’s just not our style but I think they could be a really fun addition to a wedding!

I love Mariachi bands! I was serenaded at a restaurant in Mexico… the music has such a festive vibe.

I think having a Mariachi Band would be a fantastic idea if the happy couple like that sort of music. I think it will certainly have a fun element to the celebrations.

I see no reason not to. Investing in local musicians and making an important personal choice about your wedding? Sounds like a win-win to me!

I need 3-4 Mariachi to perform in a small wedding reception at my home due to Covid-19. There will be 16 family members attending the reception. We need the Mariachi to perform for 2 hours.
